Nakhon Si Thammarat National Museum
The museum is situated on Rachdamnern Rd, at the southern end past the main wats. The museum has an impressive array of artefacts on display, with many Indian influenced pieces alongside rarer pieces from the Dvaravati and Ayutthaya Periods. The museum also has a section with art from southern Thailand. One fine example on display is a Vishnu statue, the oldest in SE Asia, dating from the 5th century. Among other interesting pieces are two Dong Song bronze drums, of which only twelve have been found in the country.
Wat Phra Mahathat
The temple lies 2 km south of town along Rachdamnern Rd. This is the oldest temple in town and the biggest in the South of Thailand. The wat dates back to 757 AD and was originally a Srivajayan Mahayana Buddhist temple. Phra Boromathat is the 77 m high stupa, a copy of the Mahatupa in Ceylon, built in the early 13th century to house relics of the Buddha from Ceylon. The wat was extensively repaired during the Ayutthayan period, with further restoration carried out in 1990.
Chapel of Phra Buddha Sihing
Situated on Rachdamnern Rd, before the clock tower. Along with The National Museum in Bangkok and Wat Phra Singh in Chiang Mai it has had the distinction of housing the original Buddha Phra Singh image that was cast in Ceylon, in the 13th century, and magically brought to Thailand.
Shadow Puppet Workshop
This small compound can be found near Wat Mahathat, on Si Thammasok, Soi 3. A visit here will take you to the master of nang thalung - Khun Suchart Subsin. Not only will you get to see the master craftsman skillfully chiseling out his designs on the lacquered calf hides, you may also get to see him perform one of his shows. Khun Suchart is accepted as the master of the art and as well as receiving many awards he was invited to perform for His Majesty the King in 1985.
Khao Luang National Park
The park is situated less than 10 km west of Nakhon and is named after Khao Luang, the tallest peak in southern Thailand at 1,835 m. The park covers an area of 570 sq km around the peak and has some of the most beautiful natural scenery in the country. The park has a great number of waterfalls and plenty of streams which can be wandered through on treks that can be organised by the local people.
Hat Nai Plao
This beach resort is situated in the northern part of the province, about 100km from Nakhon. It has long been a popular destination at weekends and holidays for the people of Nakhon and nearby Surat.
The palm fringed beach is part of Ao Khanom , the bay that starts at Hat Khanom to the north. Although popular with locals, it has had little impact on the international tourist scene. Which is perfect for those wanting a more sedate place to enjoy their deserved break.
The accommodation available is suited to most budgets, with middle price beachfront chalets to the more simplistic bungalo
